Children's Education

A high school diploma helps to prepare an individual to live an independent and secure life. A community in which every student achieves a high school education contributes to a capable workforce, and ultimately supports our country’s goal of economic competitiveness. And yet, every 26 seconds a student drops out of school*. These young adults — more than one million each year* — face diminished career opportunities and earning potential. Their challenges become ours, in the form of enormous social costs and losses in productivity.

The belief that reducing the dropout rate will improve our communities and our country’s economic potential drives the Voya Foundation’s commitment to children’s education. Our investments in children’s education empower teachers, students, and communities to ensure that every child has an opportunity to succeed. As part of our commitment to educators, Voya Financial™ honors and encourages excellence in education through signature programs, sponsorships and grants, a selection of which are highlighted in this section.

ING Unsung Heroes® Awards Program

The ING Unsung Heroes® program recognizes those classroom heroes who take teaching to new heights and make learning fun. Each year, Voya Financial (formerly ING U.S.) presents 100 grants totaling $240,000 to help fund innovative classroom projects nationwide.

National Teacher of the Year

Voya Financial is proud to be the first-ever presenting co-sponsor of the National Teacher of the Year, a program of the Council of Chief State School Officers, which is the oldest, most prestigious national honors program recognizing excellence in K-12 education in the U.S.

Run for Something Better

Because Voya Financial (formerly ING U.S) is committed to giving back to the communities where we work, live and do business, we created the Run For Something Better (RFSB) School Awards Program. Voya has worked with local communities to create school-based running and fitness programs, and distribute grants through the Run For Something Better School Awards Program. Through these grants we help elementary and middle schools nationwide introduce young people to the joys and challenges of running and show kids how exercise can help achieve good health.

America's Promise Alliance

Founded by General Colin Powell and his wife, Alma, America’s Promise Alliance is the nation’s largest partnership of groups committed to ensuring that children receive the fundamental resources they need to lead successful, healthy and productive lives and build a stronger society. Voya Financial (formerly ING U.S.) made a five-year, multi-million dollar commitment to support the organization.
