Run For Something Better
Because Voya Financial™ is committed to giving back to the communities where we work, live and do business, we created the Run For Something Better (RFSB) School Awards Program. This also aligns with the Voya Foundation’s support of children’s education.
RFSB is tackling childhood obesity, a serious nationwide health concern, by helping kids become fit through free, school-based running programs. Research shows that challenging children to get active, set goals and start a lifetime habit of physical activity will not only help children learn that exercise is fun and foster their desire to exercise before obesity ever begins, but it will also improve a child’s self-esteem, school performance and overall well-being.
In partnership with the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), RFSB awards a minimum of 60 grants (of $3,500 each) annually to elementary and middle schools nationwide to establish school-based running programs or expand existing ones. Through activity plans created by AAHPERD and based on the National Standards for Physical Education (AAHPERD 2014), the awards program offers children a healthy start to life and stimulates a desire to exercise before obesity ever begins.
Elementary and middle school teachers who are ready to make an impact on the lives of their students through healthy lifestyle changes, may step up to the starting line and apply for a grant at www.aahperd.org/run. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2014.
