Florham Park Financial Planner Gets National Recognition for "Fresh Approach" to Marriage Planning
Financial planner John Bodnar, CFP®, enjoys moonlighting as a marriage counselor. As a volunteer at Madison’s (N.J.) St. Vincent Martyr Church, he has taught more than 200 soon-to-be-married couples how to prevent a break-up over issues such as money management, insurance and retirement planning.
For his unique approach to financial planning, Bodnar is featured in MONEY Magazine’s November issue as part of a series called “A Fresh Approach.” ING U.S. Financial Services, the Financial Planning Association (FPA®) and MONEY magazine started the program to recognize innovative financial planners.
Bodnar, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and president of Bodnar Financial Advisors Inc. in Florham Park, N.J., said he began teaching part of St. Vincent’s Pre-Cana full-day program after he was referred to the church by a client whose marriage had benefited from his advice.
“What really lit the fire for me was when I did my research for the class, I confirmed the percentage that was always bandied about one in four marriages blow up and disintegrate because of money. To me, that is unacceptable,” he said.
In his class, Bodnar suggests couples talk about money during monthly “Our Marriage Inc.” board meetings so the issue doesn’t become a love buster. “Marriage is a wonderful opportunity to merge two independent financial entities and make some exciting things happen,” he said.
Anthony Profaci and his wife LaRease have attended Bodnar’s seminar and said Bodnar helped them realize how marriage involves love and money. “We were just a young couple starting out, but John treats us as if we were million-dollar clients,” Anthony Profaci said.
